“I’m no good.” I ripped the envelope in half. “I’m wasting my time. Why did I ever think I could write?” Weeks later, I received my first acceptance letter and a $50 check. “Hot dog! God must want me to be a writer.” But the following weeks brought only disappointment. “No one will ever buy my writing again. I have no talent. God must want me to do something else with my life.” Then I received another acceptance letter. My life became a frightening roller coaster ride, controlled by editors’ responses. Brief highs were followed by sharp drops into deep despair, where I wallowed until I gained confidence to try writing again. Even at the computer, my mood would swing from, “I can do this,” to “Why bother?” until a verse I read in my daily devotion rescued me from the roller coaster and put me the right track: write, rejoice, reflect on man’s comments, but rely on God’s divine plan. Thank you God for being with me during the good times and the bad. Teach me not to question and worry about my future, but to seek and trust only you. Amen. When times are good, be happy; but when times are bad, consider: God has made the one as well as the other. Therefore, a man cannot discover anything about his future.
